Thin, patchy, hard-packed turf usually isn’t a watering problem — it’s a soil problem. Foot traffic, heavy clay, and a long winter press the ground tight until roots can’t get what they need.
Core aeration pulls thousands of small plugs out of the lawn, breaking up that compaction and opening direct channels for water, oxygen, and fertilizer to reach the root zone. Deeper roots mean thicker grass that holds up through a dry August.
Power raking works at the surface. It tears out the built-up mat of dead grass, old roots, and winter debris sitting on top of your soil. That layer traps moisture, invites disease, and blocks anything you put down from ever reaching the dirt. Clearing it out leaves a clean surface for seed and fertilizer to actually do their job.
